Patriotic Pinwheels

Patriotic Pinwheels

It's the year of patriotic stitching, and here are two more little ornaments to add to your WIP pile.

I stitched up these little rounds to match my Stars & Stripes flag, and they'll hang on ornament stands, bookending a rustic grapevine wreath that I wrapped in coordinating red and white, frayed velvet ribbon. You can ask your favorite LNS or ONS to snag you a copy of Stars & Stripes now!

I stitched my ornaments on 40 count Ancient Ruin from Fox and Rabbit - which is the perfect antique blue - using one strand of floss over two fabric threads.

The models used a collection of overdyed cotton - Weeks Dye Works Carolina Cecil, Gentle Art Blackboard, and Classic Colorworks Bunny Honey - but I encourage you to pull a red, white, and blue that coordinates with your existing patriotic decor.

The ornament rounds are two different sizes because I like a little variety with my staging. The larger, Stripes pattern, is 61 x 61 stitches and finished with just over a 3" diameter on 40 count. The smaller, Stars pattern, is 49 x 49 stitches and finished at a 2.5" diameter on 40 count.

To finish, I cut mat board rounds to 0.5" larger than my stitched pieces. I covered the boards with natural quilt batting cut to size and found blue fabric in my stash that coordinated well. Using a running stitch, I cinched the fabric to the boards and laced across the back to keep it straight and secure.

Using my embroidery needle and DMC that matched my fabric, I whip stitched the two ornament halves together, sandwiching a hanger in between the halves before sealing them up.

To give them a little something extra, I hand stitched the twine with DMC that matched my fabric to give it a little color.

I hope you enjoy stitching these little rounds as much as I did. These little ornament finishes are a favorite of mine and are a great way to add a little homemade to your summer decor.

As always, happy stitching!
